Lodge of Union No. 38 donates £9,000 to local charities

The charitable donations were presented on May 1 following the Lodge’s regular meeting, with funds provided by the Lodge of Union’s Benevolent Fund.

Owers Light lodge makes heartfelt donation to Crimsham Veterans Hub
Freemasons honour late member with ongoing support for local veterans. In a moving gesture of community spirit and remembrance, The Worshipful Master of Owers Light Lodge No. 7756, Roy Blunden, presented a £400 donation this morning to the Crimsham Veterans Hub, a local support centre for military veterans and their families.

Pulborough Freemasons donate £1,200 to support local charities
Four Pulborough-based charities have received a welcome boost thanks to a £1,200 donation from local Freemasons. Members of the Pulborough Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No. 1245, with support from the Sussex Mark Benevolent Fund, presented £300 each to Pulborough Shedders, Pulborough Lunch Club, Pulborough Pantry, and the 1st Pulborough and Bury Scouts Group. The donations have already helped the organisations purchase much-needed items, including a wood planer, kitchen utensils, and tents for youth activities.

Sussex Freemasons volunteer at Amberley Museum to support local heritage.
Freemasons from across North and West Sussex came together over the weekend of March 22nd and 23rd to volunteer their time at Amberley Museum, helping to prepare the site for its summer visitors. Their work primarily focused on enhancing the Museum’s nature trail by clearing vegetation, repairing fences, and reinstating steps.

The Ordinges Lodge No. 6866 was filled with warmth and admiration as over 60 fellow Masons gathered to celebrate the 80th birthday of Worshipful Master Jack Strachan. The event was a tribute to his remarkable life of service, charity, and dedication, with over £2,000 already raised this year in his ongoing fundraising efforts. The evening was filled with speeches, toasts, and reflections on a lifetime of commitment, as friends and colleagues reminisced about his many contributions to the community and beyond.

A hospital visit can be an overwhelming experience for a young child, especially in an emergency. However, thanks to the Teddies for Loving Care (TLC) initiative, thousands of children receive a small but meaningful source of comfort in the form of a cuddly teddy bear. This initiative plays a crucial role in reducing the shock and distress young patients may feel during medical treatment.
Funded entirely through the donations of Freemasons, the TLC scheme has been making a difference since its inception in 2001.

Stephen Haymes, Master of Pagham Lodge had the pleasure of presenting a cheque to Barry knight, Chairman of the Friends of Bognor Hospital. The presentation was accompanied by an insightful tour of the hospital highlighting the impactful work of the Friends organisation. “This is a worthy and well-intentioned charity,” remarked Stephen. “It’s clear that donations are not only gratefully received but also meticulously directed toward meaningful improvements for the hospital and its patients.”

Not even the fierce winds and relentless rain of Storm Darragh could deter the determined spirit of David Slade and John Storey, the Master and Secretary of Rustington Lodge No. 6490. The pair braved the elements to attend the Christmas Fayre hosted by the 1st Rustington Scout Group, carrying with them an early holiday gift: a £1,000 donation which will be used help replace an aging minibus.

Stephen Haymes, Worshipful Master of Pagham Lodge, visited the Chichester Stroke Club at the Newell Centre, extending his support to a dedicated group of volunteers and stroke survivors. After a cheque presentation Stephen joined the club members, who meet weekly despite facing various physical challenges, from limited mobility to wheelchair dependence. Stephen felt inspired by the members’ resilience and the dedicated work of the club’s volunteers, all of whom contribute to a cause that Pagham Lodge is proud to support.

Members of the Sompting Lodge of Freemasons presented a donation to the Worthing Veterans Association. The timing of the donation, immediately after Remembrance Day, added a special significance to the gesture. The donation will assist the Worthing Veterans Association in its work to provide essential resources and support for veterans, including programmes for health, housing, and community integration.

On Remembrance Sunday, Freemasons from the Sussex Freemasons West Group paid tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, participating in parades, wreath laying and services in Chichester, Bognor, Littlehampton, Worthing, Arundel and Rustington, ensuring the sacrifices of the fallen are never forgotten.

In a wonderful demonstration of local community support, Cissbury Lodge recently donated £900 to the Nautical Training Corps, specifically benefiting the Littlehampton branch, Training Ship (TS) Implacable. The funds have already been put to great use. TS Implacable was able to purchase new tents, which are essential for the branch’s camping excursions, a central part of the training corps’ programme. The young cadets, through these camps, gain invaluable skills in teamwork, resilience, and outdoor safety while nurturing a love for adventure and a respect for the sea.

The Littlehampton Wave Life Saving Club has been awarded the prestigious title of “Lifesaving Club of the Year” by the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) in recognition of its outstanding contributions to water safety education and lifesaving skills. At the heart of this success is David Slade of Rustington Lodge No. 6490, whose commitment and leadership have driven the club’s mission forward. A staunch advocate for water safety, David has dedicated countless volunteer hours to educating young people and the community on the importance of water safety, CPR, and essential lifesaving techniques.

Ordinges Lodge in Worthing raised an impressive £4600 for ‘SAY Aphasia’, a local charity supporting individuals affected by aphasia. Aphasia is a communication disorder often caused by strokes, and the funds will be instrumental in providing resources and support for individuals and their families living with the condition.

Seven members of the West Group of Sussex Freemasons braved challenging weather conditions to participate in Stonepillow’s annual ‘Big Sleep Out’ event which involved sleeping out overnight under cardboard. Held on the lawns of Chichester Cathedral, the event aimed to raise awareness and funds to support the homeless in Chichester and Bognor Regis. Freemasons raised an impressive £3,137 in sponsorship to aid Stonepillow’s essential services.
Alongside Freemasons, the event was also attended by key local figures, including Chichester MP Jess Brown-Fuller, Chair of Stonepillow Olivia Pinkney, and the Mayor of Chichester, Sarah Quail.
